las robertas are a group of hip gals from (get this) costa rica who make hazy garage rock (a la vivian girls, best coast, dum dum girls). the fuzz is there, the 1960’s girl group influence is there, the charm is there. it’s a totally winning combination. i didn’t even think that there was a scene in costa rica, and i was right. i read an interview with the girls saying that they haven’t really found acceptance in their home country. that’s ok, just tell them to come to the usa. there’s plenty of love for them up here.
oh, and the best part is that they are offering their album as a free download on their bandcamp site. i’m telling you, bandcamp is the way to get your band out there. these girls recorded an album, put it up and now they are really taking off. they even got some play from hipster runoff. anyways, download the album and tell your friends about it.
there is this band is called heavy hawaii. apparently, these two dudes used to be in a really strange psych band with mr. nathan williams (of wavves fame). where wavves is abrasive and catchy and in-your-face, heavy hawaii is more chilled-out and hazy. 1960’s beach pop influences abound, but there is alot of really weird lo-fi stuff going on too. it’s very eerie, but it’s sweet at the same time. dig deep and let the melody of this demo sink in, because once it does, it going to get stuck to the inside of your skull. listen to some more of their jams here. oh yeah, and remind me to talk about las robertas tomorrow.
this day has been so long. here i am at 1:26am. i’ve packed and swept and mopped and dusted and now i feel like i am about to drop. i’m tired but my eyes aren’t. i’m in a weird mood and this song is the perfect fit for me right now. veg out and just listen.
