Johnny Hawaii - Smurf’s Up EP
Sometimes you listen to something and can’t help smiling. That’s how I feel with Johnny Hawaii. Here’s a short, four-song EP that, like a wonderful beach vacation, is over all too soon. The warmth of the sun just radiates off of these four songs in an almost palpable way.
The music follows a fairly simple concept. Beach rock guitar riffs with looped tropical/exotica samples. He even throws some sound clips of waves crashing in there for added mental imagery.
If you’re a fan of the tropical stylings of folks like Monster Rally or LAY BAC, then I would highly recommend Johnny Hawaii. It’s a pleasure cruise, man. You can download the free EP on bandcamp.

mp3: “The Lonely Smurfer”
Today I had the most wonderful Thai food. Then I watched Oprah because there was nothing else on TV (apparently this is her next-to-last season). Then I watched in amusement as my brother-in-law ran through the field trying to get a kite to fly.
Then I read something that made my day even better:
Monster Rally has put out some more of his amazing warped, sample-based exotica. I seriously love everything that this dude puts out. The new 7” called Color Sky is four songs long and is available for free on his bandcamp. If for some reason you haven’t checked him out yet, DO IT. Summer is ending and this is the best way to hold onto a little bit of it.
Great news! Monster Rally has just released his newest batch of songs on his bandcamp entitled Palm Reader. He creates amazing sample-based tropical music. The samples he uses are pure exotica ala Les Baxter or Bert Kaempfert. It evokes mental images of a 1950’s island vacation complete with luaus and tiki torches. The music is just enjoyable all around, and I urge you to download his two releases off of his bandcamp, which he is offering for free.
you can never have too much fuzzy tropical garage music, right? right. with that in mind, Monster Rally is offering his new ep on his bandcamp for free. free is good. free music is even better. so, head on over and download the jams and get ready for summer. (if only the weather would get its act together.)
