Theophilus London - “Flying Overseas” (ft. Solange Knowles and Lightspeed Champion)
Last week I told you about my discovery of Theophilus London. I dished about his wonderfully eclectic influences evidenced on his mixtapes.
Today on P4K I read about the brand new single that Theophilus released via Mt. Dew’s hit-or-miss Green Label Sound. Then I read two guest names that made me click “download” as fast as my mousepad would let me: Lightspeed Champion and self-proclaimed indie rock enthusiast Solange Knowles. Now that’s a dream team if there ever was one.
The song is called “Flying Overseas” and is about as smooth a jam as you could ever want. Theophilus makes his delivery sound effortless while Solange and LC croon away in the background. It’s great, grab it below.
Theophilus London crafts some of the most truly ambitious mixtapes I have ever heard. The range of influence alone on these things is unbelievable. At the core it is hip-hop, but he manages to wrap it in so many different layers and skins. Flowing seamlessly from 1970’s funk and to 1980’s pop. R&B. Jazz. Dance. Even adult contemporary. All done in Theo’s own cheeky style. It’s like he has hijacked the radio stations, layering his rhymes and grooves all over the place. His music is just alot of fun.
Back in April he released his most recent mixtape, I want You that you can download for free over on DJ Booth. If you visit his myspace you will find his two other mixtapes that are just as good as I Want You, I promise.
He also just recently released a new single on Mt. Dew’s Green Label Sound called “Humdrum Town”. So don’t forget to grab that too.
